Associate Professor Dr. Surya B. Parajuli is an experienced specialist physician who has been actively engaged in the medical field for nearly 15 years. His primary goal is to ensure health access for all and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Throughout this journey, he has played active roles in Academia & Medical Education; research & Innovation; Clinical service & Management; Health Literacy & Advocacy;  Health leadership & Management.

He completed his MBBS from Kathmandu University and MD in Community Medicine & Tropical Diseases from B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS). He also holds a Master’s degree in Humanities and Social Sciences from Tribhuvan University and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Tribhuvan University. Additionally, he completed a four-year Translational Research Fellowship at Dhulikhel Hospital under the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, supported by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). He is currently preparing for his PhD studies.

In the academia, he serves as an Associate Professor of Community Medicine at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital affiliated with Kathmandu University, where he has also served as the Head of the Department.

In research & innovation, he served as a Site Investigator in a clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of the two-vial regimen of VINS polyvalent antivenom for snakebite management, conducted in collaboration with BPKIHS and the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland.

He is the Founding Editor of the Birat Journal of Health Sciences and the Founding Member-Secretary of the Institutional Review Committee (IRC) of Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital, accredited by the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC). He is also the Founding Executive Editor of the Purbanchal University Health Journal (PUHJ). Furthermore, he serves as an editor for several international journals including PLoS One, BMC Health Services Research,  Bibechana Journal, International Journal of Perceptions of Public health, Journal of Medical Research & Innovation, the European Journal of Medical Sciences. He is actively involved in reviewing and evaluating research proposals submitted from various institutions, universities, and international organizations. He has authored about 100 scientific research articles.

Through SuRIA [Dr Surya Research & Innovation Academy], he conducts mentorship training sessions on research ethics, proposal writing, publication strategies, biostatistics, and leadership and management in health sciences. He also mentors young health science students in their research endeavors. 

In clinical service & health advocacy, he established the innovative community-based health project “Budhiganga Health Survey,” which has been providing continuous health services for the past 10 years, targeting nearly 12,000 households in Budhiganga Rural Municipality of Morang district. The project operates through partnerships among local government, community-based organizations, and academic institutions.  Since 2011, he has been hosting the radio health program “Doctor Sathi Live”, which has completed over 500 episodes, providing health information to nearly 100,000 listeners/viewers. He has authored over 400 health-related articles for general public.

In health leadership & management, he previously served as the Director of the Department of Policy, Planning, and Research at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital. He is also the Senior Vice President of the Nepalese Society of Community Medicine (NESCOM). Further, he founded the Nepal Medical Volunteer Society, which has been contributing significantly to health services for the past 15 years. In addition, he collaborates with local governments to support health policy formulation and implementation.

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, he served as a member of the Medical Expert Advisory Group to the Chief Minister of Koshi Province. He also provided expert medical support to the COVID-19 management efforts of Sundarharaicha Municipality. Representing the Nepalese Society of Community Medicine, he served in the Koshi Province COVID-19 Taskforce. He also led the health sector component in the formulation of the Second Provincial Plan of Koshi Province.

सह-प्राध्यापक डा. सूर्य पराजुलीको संक्षिप्त परिचय 

सह-प्राध्यापक डा. सूर्य पराजुली करिब १५ वर्षदेखि चिकित्सा क्षेत्रमा सक्रिय रहनुभएको एक अनुभवी विशेषज्ञ चिकित्सक हुनुहुन्छ। उहाँको मुख्य लक्ष्य सबैका लागि स्वास्थ्य पहुँच सुनिश्चित गर्नु र दिगो विकास लक्ष्यहरू हासिल गर्न योगदान पुर्‍याउनु हो। यस यात्रामा उहाँले शिक्षण, अनुसन्धान तथा नवप्रवर्तन, क्लिनिकल सेवा, स्वास्थ्य पैरवी  तथा स्वास्थ्य नेतृत्व एवं व्यवस्थापनका विभिन्न भूमिकाहरू निर्वाह गर्दै आउनुभएको छ।

उहाँले काठमाडौं विश्वविद्यालयबाट MBBS तथा  बी.पी. कोईराला स्वास्थ्य विज्ञान प्रतिष्ठानबाट MD-Community Medicine & Tropical Diseases गर्नु भएको छ। साथै त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालयबाट मानविकी तथा समाजशास्त्रमा  स्नातकोत्तर गर्नुभएका उहाँले  सार्वजनिक प्रशासनमा पनि स्नातकोत्तर गर्नुभएको छ।  उहाँले अमेरिकी राष्ट्रिय स्वास्थ्य संस्थान (NIH) अन्तर्गत राष्ट्रिय हृदय, फोक्सो, र रगत संस्थान (NHLBI) को सहयोगमा धुलिखेल अस्पतालमा चार वर्षे Translational Research Fellowship पनि पूरा गर्नुभएको छ। हाल पीएचडी अध्ययनको तयारीमा हुनुहुन्छ ।

शैक्षिक क्षेत्रमा उहाँ काठमाडौँ विश्वविद्यालयअन्तर्गत बिराट मेडिकल कलेज शिक्षण अस्पतालमा सामुदायिक चिकित्साशास्त्रका सह-प्राध्यापकका रूपमा कार्यरत हुनुहुन्छ,  साथै विभागीय  प्रमुखको जिम्मेवारी पनि सम्हालिसक्नुभएको छ ।

अनुसन्धान तथा नवप्रवर्तनको क्षेत्रमा, उहाँ सर्पदंशमा प्रयोग हुने VINS polyvalent antivenom को दुई खोप मात्रा विधिको प्रभावकारिता परीक्षणसम्बन्धी अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय अध्ययनमा बी. पी. कोईराला स्वास्थ्य विज्ञान प्रतिष्ठान र जिनेभा विश्वविद्यालय अस्पताल (स्विजरल्याण्ड) सँग सहकार्यमा साइट अन्वेषकको रूपमा संलग्न हुनुहुन्थ्यो। उहाँ बिराट जर्नल  अफ हेल्थ साइन्सेसका संस्थापक सम्पादक तथा बिराट मेडिकल कलेज शिक्षण अस्पतालको नेपाल स्वास्थ्य अनुसन्धान परिषद् (NHRC) द्वारा मान्यताप्राप्त Institutional Review Committee को संस्थापक सदस्य सचिव हुनुहुन्छ। साथै पुर्बाञ्चल विश्वविद्यालय स्वास्थ्य जर्नल (PUHJ) का संस्थापक कार्यकारी सम्पादक हुनुहुन्छ। उँहा अन्तराष्ट्रिय स्वास्थ्य जर्नल PLoS One, BMC Health Services Research, युरोपेसियन जनरल अफ मेडिकल साइन्सेस जस्ता चिकित्सा जर्नलहरूमा सम्पादकको भूमिका निर्वाह गर्नुहुन्छ। विभिन्न संस्थान, विश्वविद्यालय र अन्तर्राष्ट्रिय स्रोतहरूबाट आएका अनुसन्धान प्रस्तावहरूको मूल्याङ्कन र समीक्षा कार्यमा पनि उहाँ सक्रिय हुनुहुन्छ। उहाँको करिब १०० ओटा अनुसन्धानात्मक वैज्ञानिक लेखहरू प्रकाशित भएका छन्। उहाँले SuRIA [Dr Surya Research & Innovation Academy] मार्फत उहाँले अनुसन्धान नैतिकता, प्रस्ताव लेखन, प्रकाशन रणनीति, बायोस्ट्याटिस्टिक्स तथा स्वास्थ्य विज्ञान क्षेत्रका नेतृत्व एवं व्यवस्थापन सम्बन्धी प्रशिक्षण सञ्चालन गर्नुहुन्छ। साथै, उहाँ युवा स्वास्थ्य विज्ञान विद्यार्थीहरूलाई अनुसन्धानमा मार्गदर्शन (mentorship) प्रदान गर्दै आउनुभएको छ।

क्लिनिकल सेवा र स्वास्थ्य पैरवीको क्षेत्रमा उहाँले "बुढीगंगा स्वास्थ्य सर्वेक्षण" नामक एक नविन समुदाय-आधारित स्वास्थ्य परियोजना सुरु गर्नुभएको हो, जसले मोरङ जिल्लाको बुढीगंगा गाउँपालिकाका करिव १२,००० घरधुरीलाई लक्षित गर्दै बिगत १० बर्ष देखि निरन्तर सेवा दिँदै आएको छ। यो कार्यक्रम स्थानीय सरकार, समुदाय-आधारित संस्था र शैक्षिक संस्थाहरूको सहकार्यमा सञ्चालित छ।

उहाँले सन् २०११ देखि "डाक्टर साथी लाइभ" नामक रेडियो स्वास्थ्य कार्यक्रम सञ्चालन गर्दै आउनुभएको छ, जसले करिब १ लाख श्रोताहरु/दर्शकहरुलाई स्वास्थ्यसम्बन्धी जानकारी प्रदान गर्दै ५०० भन्दा बढी एपिसोड पुरा गरेको छ।

उहाँले सर्वसाधारणका लागि ४०० भन्दा बढी स्वास्थ्य–सम्बन्धी लेखहरू पनि लेख्नुभएको छ।

स्वास्थ्य नेतृत्व र व्यवस्थापनको क्षेत्रमा, उहाँले  बिराट मेडिकल कलेज शिक्षण अस्पतालमा नीति, योजना तथा अनुसन्धान विभागको निर्देशकको रूपमा कार्य गर्नु भएको थियो। उहाँ Nepalese Society of Community Medicine [NESCOM]  को वरिष्ठ उपाध्यक्ष पनि हुनुहुन्छ। 

उहाँले स्थापना गर्नुभएको Nepal Medical Volunteer Society विगत १५ वर्षदेखि स्वास्थ्य सेवामा उल्लेखनीय योगदान प्रदान गर्दै आएको छ। साथै, उहाँ स्थानीय सरकारहरूसँग सहकार्य गरी स्वास्थ्य नीति निर्माण तथा कार्यान्वयनमा पनि संलग्न रहनुहुन्छ।

कोभिड-१९ महामारीको सुरुवातमा, उहाँ कोशी प्रदेशका मुख्यमन्त्रीलाई सल्लाह दिने मेडिकल विशेषज्ञ समूहको सदस्यको रूपमा सेवा गर्नु भएको थियो साथै सुन्दरहरैचा नगरपालिकाको कोभिड व्यवस्थापनमा पनि विशेषज्ञ चिकित्सकको रुपमा सेवा प्रदान गर्नु भएको थियो। साथै, Nepalese Society of Community Medicine को तर्फबाट कोशी प्रदेश प्रतिनिधिको रूपमा कोभिड-१९ कार्यदलमा पनि कार्यरत हुनुहुन्थ्यो। उहाँले कोशी प्रदेशको दोस्रो प्रादेशिक योजनाका लागि स्वास्थ्य क्षेत्रको नेतृत्व गर्नु भएको थियो।
