Dr. Surya B. Parajuli [Biography]
Dr Surya B Parajuli is a simple human being practising medicine at the community level to improve the social determinants of health to contribute to achieving universal health coverage and sustainable development goals. He has been involved in academia; research & innovation; clinical care; health advocacy; health leadership and management for the last 13 years. He had completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Community Medicine & Tropical Diseases from B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS). He did MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) from Kathmandu University and a Master of Arts in Humanities and Social Sciences from Tribhuvan University. He has been a Fellow in Translational Research Capacity Building to address cardiovascular diseases in Nepal, supported by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) since 2018 AD. As an academician, he is serving as Head of the Department and Associate Professor of Community Medicine at Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital. In the field of research and innovation, he worked as a site investigator for “A randomised, double-blind, clinical trial of two dose regimens of VINS polyvalent antivenom ATC J06AA03 for the treatment of Snakebites with neurotoxin envenoming in Nepal (n 08-192)” at B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in collaboration with Geneva University Hospital, Switzerland. He is a founding Editor of the Birat Journal of Health Sciences and Member Secretary of the Institutional Review Committee of Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital approved by the Nepal Health Research Council. He has been contributing to Dengue Research, Prevention and Control in eastern Nepal through his Dengue Education Campaign (DEC). He also completed his MD thesis on dengue during an outbreak in eastern Nepal in 2013-14 AD. He is an editor of biomedical journals viz. Birat Journal of Health Sciences, Purbanchal University Health Journal, Europasian Journal of Medical Sciences, Journal of Medical Research and Innovation. He is also contributing to scientific research proposal review, analysis and evaluation. He has a significant number of scientific and general health-related publications. He is also involved as a lead facilitator in different modular training on research ethics, proposal writing, scientific publication, plagiarism, predatory journal, biostatistics, leadership & management in health and health research mentorship programs for young health science students. He is also supporting the local government in health policy formulation and implementation. As a health leadership and management, he is contributing as the Director of the Policy, Planning and Research Department of Birat Medical College Teaching Hospital. He is also vice president of the Nepalese Society of Community Medicine. He founded and has been leading the Nepal Medical Volunteer Society with significant contributions to clinical care, health advocacy, leadership and management for a decade. He has been producing and presenting the popular radio health program “Doctor Saathi LIVE’' as an eHealth initiative since 2011 which has about 0.1 million listeners/viewers with the successful completion of 500 episodes. In the field of clinical care and health advocacy, he conceptualized and has been leading a community-based innovative healthcare program (Budhiganga Health Survey) targeting 10000 households at Budhiganga Rural Municipality of Morang district of Nepal in coordination with local government, community-based organizations and academia since 2015 AD. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, he is serving as a member of the medical expert team for the Chief Minister of Province 1, Nepal, and also a Province 1 representative, the COVID-19 Task Force of Nepalese Society of Community Medicine.
