Spotter 1

2. Mention the schedule of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of Rabies. (1)

Step 1: Immediate wound management

  • Wash the wound immediately for ≥ 15 minutes with soap and running water

  • Do not apply povidone-iodine, antiseptics, or sutures

Step 2: Categorization of exposure

  • Category I: No PEP required

  • Category II: Anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) only

  • Category III: ARV + Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG)

Step 3: ARV schedule

  • Intradermal (ID) preferred: 0, 3, 7 days

  • Intramuscular (IM): 0, 3, 7, 14, 28 days or 0, 0, 7, 21 days

Step 4: RIG (for category III)

  • Single dose, infiltrated into and around the wound
